What's Goin' On! Updates...
Check out the latest under green resources, including an article on "High Efficiency Worship". James Kingsley's small(er) blog is gaining momentum and an interesting place to stay updated on what other churches are doing [speaking of which - Rodway, if you are reading this, what's the name of that RC church that won an environmental award...James would definitely be interested].
A new feature in the Daily...let me know what you guys think...but I just saw Stranger than Fiction and couldn't help seeing parallels to the Christian faith. Check out the post. It would be great to get some discussion/thoughts on that one. Do we want this type of thing on the Daily? Comments!! Post 'em!!

In the "Small(er) Blog" there is a strong statement about returning to hymnals or print copies of songs rather than using electronics (powerpoint, amplification, etc.) It would be interesting to do a specific cost analysis to determine: 1. How much energy does a projector consume for a specific amount of time or number of songs? 2. How much energy do the paper and photocopier consume for the same number of printed sheets? 3. How essential is amplification of the instruments/voices in a particular setting? There's always a challenge to find the balance. What's the priority? Does it interfere with the introduction of new (brand new, or new to the congregation) hymns or songs of praise if everything has to be in a book or printed off in multiple copies? and the process for maintaining, retrieving, and storing those copies efficiently? Turning the heat down, turning the lights down, sounds reasonable. Burning more candles? Hmm. Which sort of candles? Tea-lights have metal trays = waste? recycle? reuse? Never mind fire hazzards. Candle light creates a fine atmosphere but not always the best for reading the words on those printed sheets. All of these ideas - saving energy with candles and reusable books/songs sheets - have potential. Keep thinking outside the box and make sure the reduced impact truly is a reduction, not just the appearance of a gentler ecological footprint. Some solutions work for some styles of worship, and some don't.

I agree in a lot of ways. It seems many ideas are brought forward zealously without thinking about the full beginning-to-end life taken into consideration...

Not Rodway, but I can answer your question!! The church is St. Gabriel's at Bayview/Sheppard ... they were the first church to be "LEED-certified" ("Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design"). There's lots of info about it if you google it!
