A Long Goodbye

It is both with sadness and excitment we are announcing that TILT has officially come to an end; with sadness because for many of us TILT was a community that brought life, joy, community, support, encouragement and challenge, deepening our walk with God and each other; with excitment because in death there is the seed of new life.

Through months of prayer, discernment, discussion, listening to feedback, and "circumstances", we believe this is the right direction to take.

Many of us have found a place worshiping with the wider Spring Garden community in the mornings. If you would like help connecting with a community, we would be happy to help you find a place, either with Spring Garden or another faith community.

We all have many stories to tell about ways in which the community has been a blessing, and it will be a joy to hear in years to come of the ways in which our forming (our being "forged"!) during the TILT years shapes our paths.

The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face to shine upon and be gracious to you, the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

SUMMER TILT | July 24, August 28

TILT will not be meeting weekly for the summer, but we will be meeting twice, July 24 and Auguest 28 to stay connected with one another. Although there are no details at this time, please keep these dates free, planning to meet at the usual time of 6:00pm.

Hello friends,
For the first time in its history, TILT will be taking the summer off from its weekly worship gatherings. We will be intentional about meeting once a month through the summer (end of June, end of August). Our final weekly meeting is JUNE 26.

The TILT leadership team, with the support of the Spring Garden leadership, felt this was a necessary break because of the timing of changes occuring in the leadership team as well as a felt need to "reimagine" and seek where God is leading the community in the future. If you have any further questions, please email tilt.toronto{at}gmail.com.

We are beginning a new series focusing on the person of Jesus, looking at who he was, what he did, and our personal and cultural misconceptions and biases. Regardless if you believe in Jesus as the son of God, are just interested in finding out more, this series is a good and welcome place for all.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY | Feb 6

Join us this coming Sunday Feb 6 for our Super Bowl Sunday festivities

5:30pm Worship Gathering @Spring Garden: we will be meeting early this Sunday (5:30 instead of our usual 6) for a short time of worship through song, prayer and communion

6:00pm Super Bowl Party @Greg and Mon's house: after meeting at Spring for a time of worship we will be heading to Greg and Mon's house for continued worship in the form of enjoying a party together as we watch (or don't watch) the Super Bowl! Rides will be arranged for those without vehicles at 6pm. LIVING WELL SEMINARS: First one Sat FEB 5 @9.a.m

The living well seminars are an opportunity for individuals, couples, and families to spend time with eachother learning about effective communication, financial responsibility, and relationships and sexuality. The seminars will be led by professionals from within the Spring Garden community and are offered free of charge to all who are interested.

The first one, "Are You Listening to Me" is this coming Saturday Feb 5 @9am at 112 Spring Garden Avenue, Toronto (parking is off of Kenneth) and will explore the various ways conversation and connections can breakdown between people (partners, co-workers, family, friends) and how to foster a fresh perspective of the communication process.

The following seminars are "The D.I.R.T. on Money Management" on Feb 19 and "Delighting in our Differences" on March 5.

Refreshments are included.

Spring Garden Budget meeting | January 18th @7pm

As announced last week, Spring Garden has a budget meeting coming up on Tuesday January 18th @7pm.

As TILT is part of the Spring Garden community and since the budget exists for the purpose of enabling us to do the ministry we feel God has called us to do, this really is something that, even if not attending in person, is worth lifting up in prayer.

Besides, who doesn't love a good old business meeting! Perhaps if you're lucky you'll even get to second a motion! I (Greg) will be partying it up in the balcony if anyone cares to join me.

Important Changes for TILT!!

There are a few important schedule changes coming up over the next few weeks for TILT, so please make note of dates and times!

To begin, Tilt is changing its regular meeting time to 6:00p.m. Sunday evenings and will be meeting in the lounge for the forseeable future, with a few exceptions as noted below. The change in time and place has come about as a result of our conversations over the past month, and we're hoping these changes will addresses some of the desires and concerns expressed. If you have additional feedback, please email tilt leadership at tilt.toronto{at}gmail.com.

Here are specific dates to make note of:

DECEMBER 19 @6:00p.m.: We are having a POT-PLAN meal together (like a potluck, but without the luck part...please email the leadership team to tell them if you're coming and what you're bringing so they can plan accordingly).

DECEMBER 24 @7:00p.m.: As TILT is part of the Spring Garden community, we are sharing a Christmas eve candlelight worship gathering together @7:00 pm in the sanctuary.

DECEMBER 26: NO TILT GATHERING! Most of the community is either out of town or unable to come, so we will not be meeting.

JANUARY 2 @6:00p.m.: From this date on we will be returning to a consistent pattern of meeting every week at 6:00pm in the lounge.

It's that time of year! Light of the World, our annual celebration of singing super fun arrangments of Christmas songs and carols and eating tons of amazing desserts, is coming soon! December 12th @ 7:00pm.

TILT VILLAGE HALL MEETING

This Sunday November 21 @4pm the TILT community will be holding a "village hall" meeting (same as a town hall meeting, just with more letters) in lieu of our usual worship gathering. If you are or have recently been a part of the TILT community, please prayerfully come to participate in our conversation about the future of TILT; what God is doing and where He is leading us.

This meeting is not informational in purpose (ie to give information on decisions already made) but conversational (ie to participate in making the decisions), so if you are planning to come, please take some time this week to humbly pray and seek God's wisdom and heart for our community.

For the next 4 weeks, using Micah 6:8 (He has shown all you people what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God) as a starting point, we will be exploring what it means to live out worship once we have gone out from our gatherings of corporate worship.

Stations of Holy Week | March 28

Each year on Palm Sunday we gather together to journey with Jesus through the final moments of his life by using an adaptation of the "Stations of the Cross". On March 28th at 4:00pm (note the time change from the usual 6:30) our stations will take us through moments of the last week of Jesus' life leading up to his crucifixion as recorded in the Gospel of John in continuation with our present series "They Saw His Glory"

This year instead of using beads to assist our prayer journey, we will be using 10 knot prayer ropes. If you are not familiar with prayer ropes and would like to know more before you come, click here for more information.

Following the Stations of Holy week, stay and join us at 6:00pm for our first ever TILT Chilli Challenge (for more information, see previous post)

The Great TILT CHILLI CHALLENGE!! | March 28 2010

Coming up on MARCH 28 2010 TILT's communal worship gathering time, our yearly Stations of Holy Week will be moving to 4:00PM. Then at 6:00pm in the lounge we will be having our first ever TILT CHILLI CHALLENGE!

So bring along your pot/crockpot of chilli, whether it be a secret family recipe, some random recipe you find on google search, or a recipe of your own invention (like that "KD and whatever else is in the fridge chilli" you used to live off of), OR if you aren't able to bring a chilie, just bring yourself, a friend and your favourite eating spoon (if you don't have a favourite eating spoon, eating spoons will be provided...although they may not be your favourite).

(Oh, and YES there will be prizes for the best chille as determined by everyone in attendence)

It relates our vocation to God's character and work in this world. About three months ago, the TILT leadership team gathered together to seek God's direction for us as a community. Since that time, we've been drafting a statement that speaks to who we are and where we are headed.

On Sunday night, when we gather together, we will be exploring this statement together and trying to put "flesh" on it - i.e. what will this look like for us as a community?

The statement is as follows!
TILT will serve our city by fostering a growing, authentic, diverse community that will holistically encounter the mystery and healing of God together through worship and mission.

Easter Sunday Celebration!

Join us at 6:30 am for a Sunrise Celebration followed by a light breakfast. Spring Garden's morning gathering will happen at 10:00 am and our TILT "Stories of Life" will be at 6:30 pm.

On Sunday night, we'll be sharing with each other stories from our own lives where we have seen God alive, at work. Or it could be a new way God has revealed himself to you. Or perhaps you see the Resurrection story in a new light this year. We'd like those stories to be heard!

The season of lent is upon us, beginning on Wednesday! We've created a forum where we can share our journeys to the cross - talking about what we have given up, perhaps why, what that is breaking us free from and how we are drawing closer to God through it.

Typically, the Sabbath day is a day 'off' from whatever you are fasting from throughout Lent. If you consider Sunday your Sabbath, we would love to provide whatever you are fasting from! For example, if you are fasting from chocolate for Lent, it would be great to have chocolate for snacks at TILT for your Sabbath enjoyment! So, add a thread on the forum or let us know at TILT!

1 So they arrived at the other side of the lake, in the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil[b] spirit came out from a cemetery to meet him. 3 This man lived among the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. 4 Whenever he was put into chains and shackles—as he often was—he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.

6 When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. 7 With a shriek, he screamed, “Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you, don’t torture me!” 8 For Jesus had already said to the spirit, “Come out of the man, you evil spirit.”

9 Then Jesus demanded, “What is your name?”

And he replied, “My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man.” 10 Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place.

11 There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. 12 “Send us into those pigs,” the spirits begged. “Let us enter them.”

13 So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the entire herd of 2,000 pigs plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.

14 The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news as they ran. People rushed out to see what had happened. 15 A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons. 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him. 19 But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” 20 So the man started off to visit the Ten Towns[c] of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed at what he told them.

He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.

5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”

6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”

Communion Potluck Tomorrow!

This Sunday at TILT we are having our TILT communion potluck! As usual we are meeting at 6:30pm downstairs in the multipurpose room.

We don't assign food by name or anything like that, so if you are able to bring anything, please do. However, if you don't have time/money/whatever to prepare anything, don't worry about it! We always make extra and often those who need to take food home, we send some with them.

If you are able to come a bit earlier that evening to help set up (5:30pm onwards), that'd be great. If not, just come hungry :)

If you haven't been at a communion potluck before, a little background...the early Christian church celebrated communion over an entire meal, rather than just as part of a worship gathering. So, that is what we are doing at TILT - framing a meal together through the celebration of communion, so that the entire meal is communion.

Everyone is welcome -see you then!

This Sunday night we are going to be having a night of thanksgiving worship- thankgiving for who God is and what He has been doing in our lives and our community over the past year.

As part of our worship we are going to have opportunity to share stories of thanksgiving for where you have seen God work, so take some time to reflect on what you might like to share.
Also, because it is the first Sunday of the month we will have time for healing prayer and our caring and sharing offering.

Finally, January 11 we will be having a communion potluck, so mark it in your calendar

A Call to Fast

This past Sunday we shared how we'd like to fast this week on behalf of Debbie. She is currently homeless and, particularly as the weather becomes increasing colder, we wanted to take the time to intentionally bring her before God as a community and pray for her housing situation.

We're beginning the fast tomorrow (Wed. October 29th). It can be a one day fast (or whatever you are comfortable with) from food. For those who would be fasting from something else that may not be significant over a mere 24 hour period (eg. television, facebook), an idea is to begin tomorrow and go through until Sunday. Then Sunday night, as part of our prayer time, we'll take time to pray for Debbie together.

Even if you aren't able to fast this week, please join with us in prayer through the day on Wednesday as we lift our friend up to God.

Light of the World Dec 14 2008 | YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

As many of you know, each year we have an evening called "Light of the World"- on December 14 this year - it's a fun evening of singing funky Christmas songs arranged by Greg (K). There are amazing desserts. It's an event that you can bring any and all of your friends to. Check out last year's invitation here and story here.

For the past couple of years, we have read Christmas stories from Stuart McLean with accompanying visuals. This year, we'd like to write our own story...of YOUR STORIES. We're going to do a compilation of short stories that you send us. A small disclaimer: We won't necessarily be able to use all of the stories we receive and we'll have to edit them (in part) to fit in the script, flow and time of the evening.

So, we would love to hear some of your humourous, fun, bizarre, sorrowful, significant or meaningful Christmas stories. It might be about shopping, crazy meals, hilarious gifts, weird parties, good family times...whatever comes to mind that you want to share. Of course, we'll keep the stories as anonymous as you'd like. Please send them to this email address!! We need your stories by November 16th...

As you hopefully know from our recent annual ministry meeting, Spring Garden Church is undertaking a building campaign to improve our facilities in order to better connect and engage with our neighbouring community. We are putting together a 'coupon book' full of services that we will sell to one another, with the proceeds going to the building. Babysitting, painting a portrait, washing a car, renting a cottage, cooking a gourmet meal, going for a motorcycle ride, fitness lesson...anything! What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? Submit your idea to tilt.toronto@gmail.com along with a suggested value and we'll add you to the book. Also, if it's a service, note how many times you'd be willing to do it (so you're not babysitting every night for the next three years, etc.).

Annual Meeting + TILT Communion Potluck = Family Time

Spring Garden Church's (that includes TILT!) annual ministry meeting will be THIS SUNDAY at 5:00 pm in the Multipurpose Room (where we usually have our potluck dinners). The evening will include a discussion on building plans - if you don't know anything about this, now's the time to find out!! Although you have to be a member to vote, a significant part of the meeting is discussion and everyone is welcomed and encouraged to participate in the discussion.

CAT Team Opportunity | July Service Project

Refresh 2008 is an exciting event co-sponsored by Toronto City Housing Corporation CHU 18 and Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene. Volunteers will work together with residents of the Sheppard-Yatescastle Community to paint the inside and landscape the outside of each unit. At the same time CHU 18 Maintenance workers will be on site to bring the maintenance of each unit up to date.
The purposed of the program is more than painting, landscaping and repairing the units of the Sheppard-Yatescastle residences.
It is about working together. It is about strengthening the community. It is about doing something to make the world a better place.
Come join the team of volunteers who will make Refresh Festival 2008 a success.

What: We would love to send a team from Spring Garden/TILT to join in this amazing project and to learn how we might be able to serve in the housing communities in our neighbourhood.
When: July 6-9, 2008
